Mitchell Lennard , the Engineering Manager of Ricketts Point Power has over 30 years engineering experience in the Aerospace sector and has in the last few years focused his R&D effort on the renewable energy sector. The following outlines Mitchell’s experience.

 

Renewable Energy

Mitchell has a technical background in aircraft electrical system design and certification. Realising that aircraft electrical systems were island microgrid energy systems Mitchell started to explore if aerospace energy system concepts could be transferred to the emerging area of distributed energy systems. This investigation result in a PhD study “ Optimal Design Techniques Applied to Small Energy Systems”.

This study develops a Techno-Economic Multi Objective Optimisation technique that can be used to trade off capital investment against running costs in small energy systems (electricity and heat) in order to achieve optimal operating costs and GHG emissions over the long term system life. The study specifically focuses on how to accommodate ‘run of days’ weather profiles that is a capability not present in existing tools and methods.

It is shown that ‘run of days’ performance can be accommodated in the modeling using a mathematical technique of stochastic optimisation with general recourse. While developed around small energy systems the technique is scalable to support assessment of larger DE systems.

In parallel with completing the PhD study Mitchell has been building a prototype islanded domestic CHP power system using a multi-technology hybrid battery and marine diesel based CHP machine. A separate R&D task is underway to design and build a low incident energy solar hot water array.

Aerospace

Mitchell has in excess of 30 years experience working in the aerospace industry as a design engineer. Starting out as a detail electronic designer with a focus on autopilots and flight controls Mitchell has worked in a wide range of technologies and now works as a design team leader, certification specialist and system safety engineering specialist.

Management

Mitchell’s management experience involves managing engineering design teams (usually between 5 and 30 engineers) and having founded and managed his own engineering and product design company (Integrated Avionic Systems, IAS) for 10 years in the 1990s.

IAS was an engineering consultancy with a focus on aerospace design, product design and product support. In 2002 the Integrated Avionic Systems business was sold to Tenix Aerospace, which, at the time, was Australia’s largest defense contractor.

Education

Mitchell has been teaching undergraduate and post-graduate (Masters by Coursework) students for 20 years. Subject areas include:

  • Aircraft Electrical Systems and Avionics theory and design,
  • Aerospace EMC
  • Aerospace System Safety Engineering and Reliability
  • Aerospace Airworthiness and Certification process
  • Sustainable Systems Engineering
  • Introduction to Renewable Energy Systems

Part time lecturing for RMIT and Nova/UNSW RSAF Engineering Masters has been Mitchell has an interest in problem and project based learning and has developed subjects in sustainability engineering and system safety engineering using these pedagogies.
